Поговоримо тепер про work. Його основне значення – робота, за яку платять гроші. Відмінність work від job полягає в тому, що слово job – обчислювальне, може вживатися у множині, а work – необчислювальне. Порівняйте:

У прибиральника дійсно важка робота.

В англійській мові існує два способи для того, щоб передати чиєсь висловлювання: пряма мова та непряма мова.
 
Direct speech (пряма мова) – це дослівна передача чийогось висловлювання (а також своїх власних слів), передача чиєїсь мови слово в слово. Пряма мова з обох сторін завжди виділяється лапками та відокремлюється від вставних слів комою (рідше двокрапкою). 
 
“Leave me alone!” Jenny screamed. – “Дай мені спокій!” - крикнула Дженні.
“Are you hungry, guys?” my mum asked us. – “Хлопці, ви зголодніли?” - моя мама спитала нас.
She said, “I am afraid I won’t be able to come, I’m sorry.” – Вона сказала: “Боюся, я не зможу прийти, вибачте”.
Indirect or Reported speech (непряма мова) – це певний переказ чиєїсь мови або ж своїх власних слів. Непряма мова передається підрядним реченням за допомогою сполучників або ж без них. В такому випадку кома перед підрядним реченням не вживається. Також не використовуються лапки.  
 
Jenny implored to leave her alone. – Дженні благала дати їй спокій.
My mum asked whether we were hungry. – Моя мама спитала, чи ми не голодні.
I said I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to come. – Я сказав, що боюся, що не зможу прийти.

There are about 60 youth organizations in Great Britain. All youth organizations can be divided into three large groups : 1) non-political organizations; 2) youth organizations associated with political patties; 3) youth organizations controlled by religious bodies.

The two largest non-political youth organizations are the associations of the Boy Scouts and the Girl Guides. There are about 1, 300,000 boys and girls in them. The membership is voluntary.

The Scout Association was formed in 1908 by General Baden Powell. His idea was to train boys in mapping, signaling, knotting, first aid and all the skills that would arise from camping and outdoor activities. Most important of all for a Scout was to make a promise that he would do his best to do his duty to.

The Boy Scouts had a left-handed handshake, a special badge and the motto ‘‘Be Prepared’’. The Scout Law embraces ‘‘ honour , obedience, cheerfulness, thrift and cleanliness in thought and deed.

 The Scout movement was intended for boys from 11 to 14 (15), but in 1916 Baden Powell introduced a programme for younger people. He called them Wolf Cubs. They had special uniforms, badges, a special training system and the motto ‘‘Do tour best!’’. The Wolf Cub pack is based on Kiplng`s ‘Jungle Book’ about learning to survive.

The Girl Guids Association was founded by Baden Pawell in 1910. It`s divided into three sections : Brownies ( from 7.5 to 11) , Guides ( from 11 to 16 ), Rangers ( from 16 to 21 ). The programme of training is planned to develop intelligence and practical skills including cookery, needlework, childcare. Like a Scout a Girl Guide must be a friend to animals.

 There are some other non-political organizations : the Combined Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Corps, the Woodcraft Folk, the Youth Hostels Association, the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, Greenpeace.

There are several youth organization associated with political parties. The Youth Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament unites young people and organizes mass rallies and meetings, demonstrations, marches of protest, festivals. It co-operates with the National Union of Students.

 Religious young organizations and groups aim at helping to elderly people or working in hospitals. There are even groups where young people help released prisoners to start then life a-new. Religions organizations pay attention not only to the study of religious views but involve youth into such activities as music festivals and amateur theatre.

As you see, all there organizations aim at preserving and strengthening the social and still are doing useful work in providing leisure facilities for young English people.

Thomas Alva Edison

The American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, was born in Ohio in 1847. Tom, or Al, as his family called him, was one of those children who are always asking "Why?" He was always trying to learn how things worked or how they were made. The boy's education was limited to three months in the public school of Port Huron, Michigan. He started work in 1859 when he was only twelve. Young Edison began to travel on one of the trains between Port Huron and Detroit. He sold fruit, sweets and cakes to the passengers. The hours that he had to wait at Detroit before starting' back home, he spent in the library reading technical books. Several years later, in 1863, Edison learned telegraphy and he became a telegraph operator. He was soon one of the fastest operators in a large telegraph company in Boston. He wanted to improve the telegraph system and worked very hard at it. Night after night he read “The Book of Experiments”, by Michael Faraday, the inventor of the electric generator, in the hope that this would help him to solve his problems. He did not sleep more than four hours a night and sometimes he did not go to bed at all. He often did not even find time for breakfast. "Aren't you going to stop to eat your breakfast?" his landlady once asked him. "No", he answered, "I've got so much to do, and life is short". After a few months of work, he built a transmitter of a new kind. This was his first important invention. Edison was advised to go to New York where the opportunities were greater. He did so, but when he reached New York in 1869, he had no money left at all. "I had to walk in the streets all night because I hadn't the price of bed, and in the morning nothing to buy breakfast with", he said. But soon he opened a small workshop. In 1867 he had two inventions. One of Edison's greatest inventions was the gramophone, or the "phonograph", as he called it, which repeated his words. He told his assistants that this was the beginning. The time would come, he said, when this new instrument would record music. "It will play symphonies and whole operas, the world will hear again the great singers who are no longer living". Another of Edison's inventions was the electric lamp. Edison believed that only work could bring success. He continued active work until only eighteen days before his death in 1931, at the age of eighty-seven. That evening, Americans all over the country turned off their electric lights for a few moments — the light which, Edison had given them.

Jerry Anderson: It’s 8:42 a.m. and this is KABC Radio Los Angeles. I have with me now Jane Orbach from the organization Green California. Welcome, Jane.

Jane Orbach: Good morning. Jerry.

Jerry Anderson: You heard that traffic report, Jane. How do you feel about traffic in Los Angeles?

Jane Orbach: Well, we believe that traffic is killing the city. Do you know that at the East Los Angeles interchange there are 520,000 cars per day? That is more than half a million cars in twenty- four hours.

Jerry Anderson: What problems does traffic cause?

Jane Orbach: Well, three kinds of health problems. The first is from air pollution: more and more children in Los Angeles have asthma, bronchitis and other breathing problems. The second is from stress: sitting in traffic jams, people get angry and depressed — and they smoke more. The third is from accidents: a lot of people die on our roads, or end up in the hospital.

Jerry Anderson: So what’s good about cars?

Jane Orbach: Nothing, really. Cars get faster, but traffic gets slower. The traffic in Los Angeles now goes slower than forty years ago. Is that progress?!

Ecological Problems in Ukraine

              1)______________the red warning light — “be careful”, it is saying. To take care of the planet is to take care of our own house”. There are a lot of problems facing people in Ukraine nowadays but the most urgent problem deals with ecology. This is environmental problem which includes all living things as well as soil, air and water.

              2)_______________ with friendly and fantastic nature but its environmental problems such as water pollution, air pollution, soil        pollution, noise pollution, acid rains, radioactivity, disruption of Flora and Fauna and depletion of             natural resources make us think about its future. If we don’t take care of our environment now, we will suffer the most in the nearest future.

              3)_______________, lakes and ponds in Ukraine. Most of them are extremely polluted because plants and factories dump chemical wastes into them. As a result, fish die and people suffer from different stomach diseases.  We should make factories and plants use recycling technologies and install antipollution equipment             to reduce water contamination.

              4)________________ in Ukraine has increased since last years. The greater number of cars, trucks and trailers fume poison into the air we breathe as well as factories. This type of pollution provokes heavy allergies, cancer and other health problems. Moreover, it causes acid rain which kills trees and plants. In order to stop air pollution we should reduce the number of cars and start using public transport. More plants and factories should put special filters on their chimneys.

5)________________ is also a great problem in Ukraine. It happens because waste materials are being dumped on land and chemicals are being extensively used in agriculture. Why do we use so much chemicals for growing plants and crop? What is more, we should not pollute our fields and forests with litter.

              6)________________ is among the most dangerous environmental problems in Ukraine. It is invisible and we can’t even feel it any way but its influence is horrible. For example, Kirovohrad suffers from this problem and, what is more, it is difficult to solve it. In order to protect the environment and people from radiation we should control its level regularly and strictly. Radioactive wastes should be stored in special places far from our homes.

              7)________________ along with the others left aside can and should be solved immediately. Now it’s not too late to take measures in order to live in a healthy country with pure lakes and rivers, green lands and rich animal world. Let’s protect the environment of Ukraine and make it the best place to live in.

Почнемо з різниці між job і work.

Job – робота, праця. Це конкретна робота, яка приносить гроші.

Mike’s job hardly lets him make ends meet.

Робота Майка ледве дозволяє йому звести кінці з кінцями.

I got a job in an advertising agency.

Я отримала роботу в рекламному агентстві.

Друге значення – завдання. Це якась справа, яку треба зробити.

The first job in planning a wedding is to make a list of guests.

Mike has a hard job as a janitor.
