Easter is the feast of Christ’s resurrection.

In Ukraine Easter is called Velykden (The Great Day). In Ukraine Easter has been celebrated over a long period of history and has had many rich folk traditions.

Ukrainian Easter is a historical combination of heathen and Christian traditions. Velykden was celebrated thousands of years ago as the victory of the Light over the Dark, Day over Night, Spring over Winter.

 The last Sunday before Easter is called Willow Sunday (Verbna nedilia). On this day pussy-willow branches are blessed in the church.

The week before Easter, the Great (Velykyi) Week (Holy Week), is called the White (Bilyi) or Pure (Chystyi) Week. During this time an effort is made to finish all field work before Thursday, since from Thursday on work is forbidden. Pure (Maundy) Thursday is connected with ritual of clarification by water

On Passion (Strasna) Friday—Good Friday—no work is done.

Saturday evening people gather in the church for the Easter vigil till the very morning when priests bless the food believers brought. After that people go home to celebrate Easter with their families. If they meet other people on the way they say: “Christ is risen!” and these people should reply “Risen indeed”. All the people exchange Easter greetings and give each other painted eggs (krashanky).

Easter cake (‘Kulich’) and painted eggs (‘Krashanki’) are the symbols of Ukrainian Easter and obligatory food on the table this day. Kulich is baked from yeast dough in the form of cylinder.

 Krashanka is a boiled and painted egg. On this Day Ukrainian kids play their favorite Easter game: knocking the eggs. If you knock somebody’s egg and your egg is not broken than you are the winner.

The krashanky and pysanky (Easter eggs) are an old preChristian element and have an important role in the Easter rites. On this day they are given as gifts or exchanged.

1. KYIV

Kyiv is one of the largest and most beautiful cities in the world. The main street is Khreshchatyk. There are many historical monuments there. Among them Saint Volodymyr's Cathedral, Sophia's Cathedral, Saint Andrew's Church and Kyiv — Pecherska Lavra. Andriyivskiy Uzviz  is very popular with tourists. It is the best place to buy Ukrainian souvenirs. The city has many museums and theatres. Golden Gate is a magic place.

2. LYIV

Lviv is situated in Western Ukraine. Its narrow old streets and its historic centre make it one of the best places in the country. Lviv's main street is Freedom Avenue. It runs from Mitskevych Square to the Ivan Franko Opera and Ballet Theatre. In the middle of the avenue there is a statue of Ukrainian national poet, Taras Shevchenko. Opposite Lviv University there is a monument to the Ukrainian poet Ivan Franko. Lviv's open-air Museum of Popular Architecture and Life is worth visiting.

3) KHARKIV

Kharkiv is quite an old city. It was founded about 350 years ago. Today Kharkiv is the second largest city in the country. About 2 million people live here. Kharkiv is very beautiful, especially in spring. There are over 2500 streets and 26 squares in the city. And you will find a lot of fountains there. There is a circus, a zoo, a planetarium, dolphinarium and many museums here. Many students from different countries studies in universities there.

   Kate and Ann Petrova are twins. They are schoolgirls. The twins are very much alike, and their teachers never know which is which.

   One day the teacher of English says, “Kate Petrova, take your book and come up to my table!” But Kate does not know the lesson. She cannot read the new text. So she says to her sister, “Help me, Ann! I don’t know the lesson. I can’t read the text. You go and it!”

   Ann stands up and goes to the teacher's table. She begins to read. She reads the text very well.

   The teacher says, “You read very well, Kate Petrova, you get a five. Shut your book and sit down.”

   Ann goes to her place and sits down. The twins are happy. But the teacher wants to ask Ann Petrova, too. He says, “And now Ann Petrova, you take your book and come up to my table!” And he looks at Kate.

   Now Kate must go and read the text. But she cannot read it. The twins do not know what to do.

Конструкція there is / there are використовується в реченнях, якщо нам треба сказати про наявність якогось предмету в деякому місці. Тобто про те, що щось (хтось) десь знаходиться.

Порядок слів у реченні з there is / are

Не забувайте ставити «there is / there are» в початок речення, коли ви говорите про місцезнаходження чого-небудь. Це допоможе вашому співрозмовнику з самого початку зрозуміти, що мова йде про знаходження чогось десь.

Christmas in Ukraine is celebrated on the 7^th of January.

The evening before Ukrainian people have the Holy Supper.

It begins when the first star appears in the evening sky.

Then the head of the family brings in didukh (a sheaf of wheat) and puts it in the corner of the room.

The hostess puts kolach ( sweet Christmas bread) and 12 dishes on the table.

The main dish is kutia . It is made of boiled wheat grains, poppy seeds, raisins, nuts, honey.

The dinner starts with the prayer.

At the end of the holy supper the family sings koliadky (Christmas carols).

Young people organize vertep (Christmas play).

They go from house to house and show the scenes of Jesus Christ’s birth.
